The dynamics and impacts of explosive volcanism

Our multidisciplinary investigation of explosive volcanic eruptions includes:

  • Monitoring and remote sensing of explosive volcanoes such as Soufriere Hills, Monserrat.
  • Mathematical models of explosive eruption mechanisms on Earth and elsewhere in the solar system.
  • Laboratory simulations of explosive eruptions using a magma analogue.
  • Investigation of how volcanic pollutants are dispersed in the atmosphere.
  • Study of the impact of volcanic ash on soil and vegetation.
