DVFC RAINFALL

The twenty-four year mean rainfall (1986-2009 inclusive) for the DVFC raingauge is 2,862 mm (± 442 mm standard deviation). The wettest months are January and October with 312 mm and 295 mm, respectively. April is typically the driest month with 158 mm on average and it also has by far the most variable rainfall total with a Coefficient of Variation (CV) of 67 % against a mean monthly CV of 45 %. The three-month period from March to May has the least predictable rainfall totals. The heaviest daily rainfalls recorded (i.e., those in excess of 100 mm/d) are 135.0 mm on 4 January 1990, 115.6 mm on 15 July 1991, 107.5 mm on 22 January 1994, 162.5 mm on 19 January 1996, 124.3 mm on 27 September 1998, 139.8 on the 31 January 2000, 109.4 mm on the 17 June 2000, 100.0 mm on the 26 December 2000, 140.6 mm on 8 January 2001, 119.5 mm on 14 December 2003, and 108 mm on 28 December 2003, 100.1 mm on 5 February 2006, 182.2 mm on 9 February 2006 and 104 mm on 15 October 2006 and 124.6 mm on 25 January 2007.

Annual reports below compare that year's data with an average from 1986 to the year being analysed:

Rainfall in 2009 totalled 3363.5 mm, with 118 % of normal rainfall, and the third wettest on record. August had the least rainfall (as in 2008) – only 133 mm (73 % of the long-term average), while October had the greatest rainfall with 426.4 mm (145 % of the long-term average). The magnitude of the seasonal variations in rainfall was below average with a CV of only 36 %, against the long-term average monthly CV is 46 %. There were a total of 243 raindays in 2009 against an average of 227 raindays.

Rainfall in 2008 totalled 3219.6 mm, with 113 % of normal rainfall, and the fifth wettest on record. Unusually, August had the least rainfall – only 149.8 mm (81 % of the long-term average), while May had the greatest rainfall with 370.3 mm (144 % of the long-term average). The magnitude of the seasonal variations in rainfall was well below average with a CV of only 23 %, against the long-term average monthly CV is 47 %. There were a total of 257 raindays in 2008, the greatest number on record, against an average of 226 raindays.

Rainfall in 2007 totalled 3021.7 mm, with 107 % of normal rainfall, and the seventh wettest on record. April had the least rainfall – only 95.2 mm (63 % of the long-term average), while November had the greatest rainfall with 434.5 mm (168 % of the long-term average). The magnitude of the seasonal variations in rainfall was just below average with a CV of 40 %, against the long-term average monthly CV is 48 %. There were a total of 238 raindays in 2007 against an average of 225 raindays.

Rainfall in 2006 totalled 3083.1 mm, with 110 % of normal rainfall, and the sixth wettest on record. April had the least rainfall at 149.1 mm (98 % of the long-term average), while October had the greatest rainfall with 366.9 mm (127 % of the long-term average). The magnitude of the seasonal variations in rainfall was above average with a CV of 72 %, against the long-term average monthly CV is 48 %. There were a total of 246 raindays in 2006 against an average of 224 raindays.

Rainfall in 2005 totalled 2274.9 mm, with 81 % of normal rainfall. April had the least rainfall - only 60.3 mm (39 % of the long-term average), while June had the greatest rainfall with 371.7 mm (161 % of the long-term average). The magnitude of the seasonal variations in rainfall was above average with a CV of 51 %, against the long-term average monthly CV is 46 %. There were a total of 218 raindays in 2005 against an average of 223 raindays.

Rainfall in 2004 totalled 3005.8 mm, with 106 % of normal rainfall. August had the least rainfall - only 61.7 mm (32 % of the long-term average and driest August on record), while January had the greatest rainfall with 338.3 mm (108 % of the long-term average). The magnitude of the seasonal variations in rainfall of 42 % CV was similar to the long-term average monthly CV is 46 %. There were a total of 224 raindays in 2004, the same as the long-term average.

Rainfall in 2003 totalled 3538.6 mm, the wettest year on record, with 126 % of normal rainfall. August had the least rainfall - only 93.2 mm (47 % of the long-term average), while September had the greatest rainfall with 436.4 mm (220 % of the long-term average). The magnitude of the seasonal variations in rainfall was above average with a CV of 53 %, against the long-term average monthly CV is 46 %. There were a total of 238 raindays in 2003 against an average of 223.6 raindays.
