Saturday 23rd November: Caving or Not?

A second chance at February’s cancelled Calf Holes trip. With the option of a walk up Pen y Ghent if it’s too wet for caving (or if you prefer that!) Meet at the Pen Y Ghent Cafe in Horton in Ribblesdale at 11.00am. Bring a harness and descender for the short entrance pitch if you have them, or we can bring a ladder.

21st/22nd December: Walking in Langdale

Avoid the pre- Christmas stress with a hut weekend in Langdale. There will be winter walking and a communal meal on Saturday night. Let us know if you want to come so we can book some beds and sort food.

22nd/23rd March: The Roaches

A weekend based with Bill and Elen in the south of the Peak District. Could be walking or biking, or both. May even be mild and dry enough for rock-climbing. Come along and see what the weekend brings!

12th/13th April: Biking Llandegla

Last year this one was cancelled because of snow – lots of it! So this year the details are all the same but we’ve shifted it a month later. If you plan to go to Howard and Jo’s don’t forget to let them know

Mountain biking in the forest, with trails at all grades. You are invited to Howard and Jo’s for Saturday night. Howard says: “5 people get a bed after that it is camping or sharing with the horses or chickens” so let him know! LLandegla is about 10 miles north of Llangollen, H+J’s place house is at Froncysyllte, about 5 miles east of Llangollen. (Llangollen is near Wrexham!)

31st May/1st June: Camping in North Wales

Ever-popular, come and join us for a weekend in North Wales. Gwern Gof Uchaf is the scenic campsite below Tryfan, where we’ve stayed many times. It also has a bunk house if you don’t fancy camping (though this needs to be booked in advance) Usual outdoor activities: walking, climbing and possibly mountain-biking on the Marin, a prepared trail in the woods near Betws y Coed.

Don’t confuse this site with Gwern Gof Isaf, just up the road, but be aware that they also have a bunk house if Uchaf’s is full and you don’t want to camp.

Events and News Update:

As many of you know, Ken retired in the summer, after 30 years of teaching Physics (and Anne kind-of retired, in that I’m avoiding phoning the supply-teaching agency!) This means that it has become much more difficult to find the time for Slugs events and squeeze them in between the holidays. So please (more than ever) if you want events to happen, contact us and offer to coordinate them!

Perhaps a fresh approach is to have more spontaneous events. We are very happy to circulate details of any get-together any-one wants to suggest, even if it is last-minute stuff like “Meet at such-a-place for a walk next Sunday” So if you want to keep in touch with other Slugs, please try to be more pro-active.

Address List:

Big thanks to Phil Johnstone for keeping an up-to-date address and email list. The latest version is included.

You will notice that Colin and Jane have moved to Goncelin, between Grenoble and Chambery, so best wishes to them in their new life!

Many of the Slugs children are grown up and independent. If your Sluglet would like to be included on the mailing list, and come on Slugs events, please tell them to email Ken and Anne:

They’d always be very welcome. Some Sluglets keep in touch via Facebook. Please tell your offspring to email Nicole Boardman: if they want more info. (Parents not allowed!)

As usual there will be a skiing trip in January, so if for some reason you’re not already in the loop for this, contact Phil Johnstone and you can find out about this year’s trip (currently in the planning stage) and be kept in touch for future years.

Hope to see you at one of the events this year.  Ken and Anne.
