SLUGS EVENTS AUTUMN 2011 – SUMMER 2012

12/13th November:    Climbing in Derbyshire

End-of-season rock-climbing at a sheltered location in the Peak District. (Actual location to be decided when we know what the weather is doing). You are invited to Bill and Elen’s for Saturday night, and to see what Sunday brings. They plan to cook a pre-Christmas roast, so make sure you contact them if you are coming.

Saturday 26th November:   Caving in Wharfedale
Buckden Gavel Mine is at the top end of Wharfedale. Phil says: “It@s all walking (unless you do some rather hairy traverses) and dry apart from the first 200 m which are welly-deep water. Wellies, old clothes and a helmet and light are all you need. It@s not weather-dependent apart from the walk up which would be fairly miserable in the rain.”

Phil Johnstone: (01524 37688) phil@hellobroadband.co.uk

17/18th December:   Walking in Borrowdale

Come for a winter walking weekend in the Lake District. We will be staying at the Fell and Rock hut in Rosthwaite, so let Ken and Anne know if you are coming so we can book some beds.

Saturday 28th January:   Mountain biking in Gisburn Forest

Some entertaining single-track, or simply pleasant off-road riding in the woods. Meet up at Gisburn Forest and choose your activity-level. You will be welcome to stop with Ken and Anne for the weekend and perhaps go for a walk or another bike-ride on Sunday.

Saturday 25th February:   Biking on Cannock Chase

A social biking trip in the Midlands. Meet at the Forest Visitor centre near Rugeley (Staffordshire) at midday, where you can hire a bike for £20 if you haven’t got your own. Jes is proposing an easy-going amble for 2/3 hours, so any-one can come along.

24/25th March:  Camping at Keld in Swaledale

Good for walking, biking, and poking around in the lead mines. The campsite has a barn to gather in if the weather is doubtful, and a bunkhouse  if you don’t fancy camping. (nb. Park House is 20 mins walk from Keld, and not to be confused with the similar-named campsite in the village)

Sunday 29th April:  Mountain Biking

A high-level route, across the Howgills, Lakes, or Dales, (weather permitting) for fairly fit bikers. Get in touch if you want to come along, or if you want a gentle alternative ride. We will hopefully arrange two groups. (Or it may be one group doing a wet –weather alternative!)

 26/27th May:  Peak District

Campsite to be decided later, or just meet up for the day. A great area for walking, climbing, or biking. Put it on your calendar and see what the weekend brings!

Anne and Ken (01200 425841) daykin@talktalk.net

30th June/1st July:  Wasdale

There’s the Fell and Rock hut (sleep in or camp outside) or the National Trust Campsite. A lovely location for walking, scrambling, or rock-climbing in the Lakes. Contact Anne and Ken

14/15th July:  West Wales Coast

Come and camp at Shell Island, near Harlech. A beautiful scenic location by the sea with potential for action or relaxation! Explore  the Rhinogs or Snowdonia, or enjoy the beach. However, note that the campsite access is affected by the tides. If next year’s tide-times prove to be a problem we’ll change the location. Contact Anne and Ken, or ask Pete and Meg what it’s like, because they’ve been there!

LOOSE ENDS:

Scotland in the Summer:

If you might be interested in a trip to Torridon end of July/beginning of August, speak to Anne or Elen quite soon. We’re thinking of booking a bunkhouse so we can go to Scotland without being eaten by the midges!

Downhill Skiing next Winter:

There will be the usual downhill ski trip in January, so contact John Boardman if you’re interested.

John: (01535 681863)  (07775796270)  jaybee258@hotmail.com

Or Ski touring:

We are also hoping to arrange a ski mountaineering/touring trip, so any adventure skiers out there who are interested contact Anne Daykin   (01200 425841) daykin@talktalk.net

Remember: you can organize a get-together any time of year and ask Ken and Anne to circulate details to SLUGS
