SLUGS EVENTS 2011

Just when you thought it was safe to slither out of the cabbage-patch...

December 18/19th    Pre- Christmas weekend in Borrowdale.

Come and stay at the Salving House (FRCC hut in Rosthwaite) or take a break from the Christmas shopping and join us for the day. We haven’t checked there’s room in the hut yet, so tell us quick if you want to come, so we can book some spaces.

January 15/16th    Winter weekend near the Roaches (Staffordshire)

You’re invited to a convivial weekend walking, biking, possibly even skiing or sledging, based at Bill and Elen’s. Further details will whizz round in due course.

February 13th (Sunday)   Awesome Walls, Stockport

Fun day out at the climbing wall. Grades from easy to desperate, and plenty to go at.

March 12/13th    Mountain biking, Gisburn Forest.

From easy tracks to purpose-built black runs. It’s Matthew’s 17th birthday, so come back to ours and celebrate on Saturday night; we’ll go for a walk on Sunday.

April 3rd (Sunday)   More Biking

Could be a good day for a bike ride, possibly across the Howgills.

Details of where to meet will be circulated nearer the time.

May 21/22nd  Teesdale

Just for a bit of variety, we’re heading to the North Pennines. Camping at Highside Farm, Bowbank, Lunedale, Middleton in Teesdale.  Recommended for climbing, walking, canoeing, cycling and just looking.  www.highsidefarm.co.uk

Contact Elen if you plan to come – if there’s enough interest she’ll try booking the whole site.

June 11/12th North Wales

A chance to walk or climb in Snowdonia, camping under Tryfan.

July 9/10th  Bivvy in Upper Eskdale

I traditionally organise a bivvy meet for the Clitheroe Mountaineering Club, and traditionally the weather is poor and we go to a hut instead. If you want to throw in your lot with a small group of climbers, let me know!

Loose Ends:

Skiing Trip

Word has already gone out about this year’s skiing trip, which will be in January. If you are interested let John know immediately, because he’s looking for cheap deals at this very minute!

Winter in Scotland

We hope to have at least one Winter weekend in Scotland, possibly in March.

Probably half-term as well: 19/20th February, for weekend and beyond. Let us know if you might want to join us, and we’ll make a decision based on how the snow shapes up.

Summer in the Picos

A return visit to Tresviso is a distinct possibility next year, camping in our usual spot. However, some of us may have to do a bit of caving, to convince the National Parks Authority that we’re a bona fide expedition and therefore allowed to camp within the National Park. More details will follow.

50 Years of Caving in the Picos de Europa

Carolyn tells us that plans are underway for an International  Congress for Picos de Europa Speleologists, to coincide with 50 years of exploration. All caving groups that have been involved will be invited to this event. It is expected to take place before the summer caving campaigns get underway, possibly the May bank holiday weekend, 29th April to 2nd May. We’ll circulate more information as it unfolds, but if you’re interested contact Carolyn.   Carolyn Ginnever:  cazz1@hotmail.es

And finally...

In these days of electronic communication it is comparatively easy to circulate details of events as they crop up (though our computer still thinks we’re Spamming and makes us email lots of little groups rather than one big mail-shot). So if you’re doing something and want Slugs to join in, let us know!

In the same vein, I am already collecting ideas for the next events list, which will come out in time for September if there is anything to put on it, so make my job easier and volunteer to coordinate something!
