SLUGS Newsletter – March 2003

25-26 April – Whernside Manor weekend. Whernside Manor, Dentdale (scene of many hilarious SRTree rescues) has a bunkhouse, also camping space and 1 twin and 1 single B&B. The bunkhouse, capacity 12, is booked for the weekend of 25/26 April, and there is one place left: £5 per person per night. Camping is £3 pppn, no need to book, just turn up. 3 May – Party at Foxup. Kevin Ellis is having an all-day, drop in and out, party. No need to RSVP. Foxup, Littondale, Skipton, W. Yorks (It’s a tiny hamlet in the heart of the Dales. There’s only three houses so it should be obvious which one to go to. Phone 01756 770367 if you get lost.)

31 May – Phil’s 50th birthday party. Come and help us celebrate: 8 p.m. till late, with food, drink and whatever else you feel like (very much like last year, in fact). 48 Rydal Road, Lancaster LA1 3HA, 01524 37688 <phil@enotsnhoj.freeserve.co.uk>. 21-22 June – Lake District. Camping at Stonethwaite, Borrowdale, grid ref NY 257140. Nice site; visit the secret howff (or we might switch to Snowdonia if the forecast is better there). Contact Phil and Rosie 01524 37688.

12 July – Caving. By popular demand, Phil will be organising another caving trip for the lapsed Slug (see below), and he might even have some tackle so we can do a pitch or two. Meet in Bernie’s, Ingleton, 10 a.m.

19–20 July – Lake District. Backpack from Seathwaite to Styhead Tarn and spend a night at altitude (or camp in the valley if the weather’s bad) – Contact Meg and Pete Owens, 01925 263507.

16 August – More caving. If there’s interest, I’ll find another easy-ish trip in the Dales. Meet in Bernie’s 10 a.m.

23–25 August (Bank Holiday) – Camping trip to be arranged. Suggestions needed!

18–19 October – Coach House, Buttermere. The ever-popular hut near the shore of the lake. Climbing, walking, water things, grid ref. NY 185161. Contact Ken and Anne Daykin, 01254 883934.

20–21 December – Raw Head Cottage, Langdale. Escape the Christmas shopping and enjoy the winter Lake District – and have a Christmas party on Saturday Night. Tinsel and long white beards obligatory. Contact Ken and Anne Daykin, 01254 883934.

Lancaster and district Slugs meet in the Gregsons Bar, Moor Lane, Lancaster, on the last Friday in the month, 9-ish onwards. Drop in if you're free and/or in the area.
