*February 1996

February had below average temperatures for most of the month, and was the 5th coldest on record since 1966. Heavy snowfall with drifting on 6/7/8 February that blocked littlefell lane - the road to the weather station. Observations continued, but the observer had to walk in from Galgate, some 4km away. The road was completely impassable for several days, and was only cleared by a snow blower and JCB.

*January 1996

After a bitterly cold spell over the Christmas week in 1995, with minimum temperatures of nearly -10 degrees C, January was much warmer. The first three weeks saw well above average temperatures with night frosts ocurring only in the last week. There was very little sunshine, except in the last week of the month. The sunshine total was only 68% of average. The drought continued from 1995, and January was the second driest on record with only 40mm of rainfall.
